Dear friends & family,
We are so grateful that we’ve been able to continue serving you during these challenging times. The support we’ve received is overwhelming, and we want you to know how grateful we are to be part of such a loyal, loving community. We are unsure of how this pandemic will affect our business in the coming weeks, but we will continue to do everything within our power to continue supporting our employees, vendors, customers, and community.
We’ve received many questions over the last two weeks about what actions we will take as a business to navigate the COVID-19 crisis. All of our employees have been given the option to take a temporary leave of absence if they do not feel comfortable working, with the confidence of knowing their jobs with us are safe.
We feel confident that even with fewer staff, we can continue operating within our normal hours of Monday-Saturday 9:00 am - 7:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
An Update on Changes and Action We are Taking
Yesterday, on Tuesday March 24th our entire Leadership Team sat down and reflected on the last couple weeks, and how we can continue to adapt and do what is best to keep our customers and associates safe.
Now that stockpiling seems to have stopped, our store is generally quiet enough to be able to practice social distancing safely. It is also okay for customers to wait outside the store if they feel it is too busy when they first arrive.
The store tends to be much slower during the first two hours, and last two hours of the day - especially on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We recommend shopping at these times if possible to reduce the bigger rushes that happen during the middle of the day.
We will be placing tape on the floor near the registers. We ask that you wait behind the tape until the person checking out in front of you has completed their transaction and has stepped away from the register. If a line forms behind the tape, we ask that you maintain the social distance protocol whenever possible. As you are shopping, please be mindful of the distance between you and other shoppers or our staff members who are trying to safely keep displays full with produce and grocery product. Try to keep a distance of 2 shopping carts between one another. Thank you for partnering with us to keep shopping at Peter Rubi a safe and pleasant experience!
We are working diligently to get new grocery products added to our website every week so you can continue to order products to be shipped directly to your home. We are offering free shipping with orders over $50.
While we are unable to offer online ordering of our produce or ready-to-eat prepared items, we are introducing a curbside pick-up option for those who are interested. Orders will only be accepted online. Questions about curbside pick-up can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Parking spots on the side of our building near the alley will now be labelled and designated for curbside pick-up.
How We Are Giving Back During This Time
Supporting our community has always been an important part of the work we do. We’ve donated thousands of dollars worth of produce and gift cards to organizations over the years.
Right now, we are donating $5 of every Snack Box purchase to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Northern Illinois Food Bank partners with hundreds of food banks across the northern Illinois area to provide food to those who need it. For every $1 donated, they are able to provide $8 worth of food to our hungry neighbors. That means with every Snack Box purchased, our $5 donation will turn into the equivalent of $40 worth of groceries. With so many people affected financially by this crisis, we feel strongly about supporting this organization.
More and more,we’ve been getting questions from people wanting to know what steps they should take to further their wellness journey and strengthen their immune system. After many years of research, Maria has compiled a list of her favorite resources and made it public to the community. For those looking for a more individualized approach, we are offering a free wellness call with John & Maria with the purchase of $100 worth of groceries online.
Please know that we are praying with and for you at this time. We will continue to re-evaluate our options as the situation continues to change, and we will keep you updated of any adjustments we need to make.
Again, we are so blessed to be part of this incredible community. We hope that you stay safe and well.
Please reach out to us if you have any questions,
John, Maria & The Peter Rubi Team
Keep Up with What We Have Done So Far
**We will post updates here as things change over the coming weeks**
On Friday March 13, John explained that we are taking additional steps to keep the store clean, including sanitizing shopping carts, registers, bathroom doors, etc. We have also increased hand washing and glove wearing. When our employees are not feeling well, we ask them to go home and rest.
On Thursday March 19th, John explained that we are not going to offer special shopping hours for seniors and folks with compromised immune systems because we want to protect them and truly believe having all of them in our small space at the same time is not what’s best! We encourage young, healthy people to shop for our vulnerable friends, family, and neighbors (and that those who are vulnerable be open to the help!).
On Saturday March 21st, John encouraged customers to please be respectful of each other, and to work with us as a team to keep all of us safe. He recommended that only one person from each family come to the store to shop, to not bring children if possible, and to practice social distancing within the store.
