Nothing “Plantain” About It

Updated: Nov 22, 2019

Far too often we eat food that tastes good, but doesn’t make us feel so good. This was true for Maria Guzman, until she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s Disease. As part of her treatment, she underwent various testings and elimination diets to identify her sensitivities.

As Maria began to adjust to a whole food, plant-based diet, she felt a drastic change in how she felt on a daily basis. Passionate about nutrition after her lifestyle change, she became a certified nutritionist to help others make the same change.

The impact did not stop with Maria; her family began to take notice of her transformation. Learning from Maria’s experience, her cousin José Nino started identifying his own food sensitivities. He too cut out all gluten, dairy, artificial ingredients, hydrogenated oils, and foods with preservatives. He immediately began to feel the difference in his body. Within three months, the acne he had always struggled with cleared.

Determined not to revert to their old eating habits and fueled by their new found passion to share what they knew, the Guzmans created a line of delicious plantain and cassava snacks with a sharp focus on clean ingredients. Artisan Tropic was born. Being Colombian, they sourced the highest quality natively grown plantains and cassava and processed them completely in their home-country. In an effort to arrive at an even larger impact, they chose to employ local Colombian as it is often difficult for women to find jobs there.

What makes Artisan Tropic snacks so irresistible and healthy? Potatoes are part of the nightshade family, which means they often cause inflammation. Plantains, on the other hand, are part of the banana family and are packed with nutrients. They offer natural versatility in sweetness levels - based on whether the fruit is green or yellow - and have many health benefits like digestion regularity and high antioxidants.  Additionally, cassava is a root vegetable with a lower moisture level, meaning it absorbs significantly less oil during the cooking process than potatoes - thus containing significantly less fat.

The story behind Artisan Tropic is one rooted in family, putting people first, developing trust, hard work, giving back, kindness, and joy; it is one that moves from a family farm to a family snack of healthy, delicious plantain and cassava strips.
